Local Senior Resources and Initiatives

June 18, 2019
For those of you who may not have seen the recent news, there are two important developments in the greater Akron and Summit County areas that we thought you should be aware of.

First of all, GettingWiser.org is a website that was recently launched by the Summit Senior Coalition, a group of non-profits and agencies funded by our friends at the Akron Community Foundation. The goal is to help seniors and caregivers locate the best services for the residents of Summit County to allow them to age positively and plan ahead for future needs.

A community wide needs assessment completed in 2017 learned that many seniors are unclear about what services are available and what is covered by Medicare. The coalition wants people to understand their options for aging with dignity and independence. The organization has found that if people do their homework and understand what's available, this can reduce fear and be a very positive experience. We encourage you to check out their website and to be aware for yourself, aging family members or loved ones.

Secondly, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan announced in late May that the city has officially enrolled in the process to become part of the AARP Network of Age Friendly Communities. "Age Friendly Akron" will focus on issues that affect the quality of life for seniors including housing, transportation, walk ability, public spaces, community engagement, street design and public health. During the first year the city will conduct an assessment of the needs of the residents. In the second year an advisory committee will analyze the results and identify priorities, which they hope to implement over the final three years of the program.

As many of the clients of Impel Wealth Management call the greater Akron and Northeast Ohio communities their home, we want to make certain that you were aware of these important initiatives. These could create resources for you or a loved one in the future. Please research these initiatives if interested. We will continue to monitor the developments and progress being made as we keep on "Moving Life Forward" for our friends and clients.
