Remember, Honor, and Teach

February 05, 2025

For several years now, my sister and I have participated in the annual wreath laying at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. The event is held in conjunction with Wreaths Across America. Their mission is to “Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom”.

The cemetery is outside of Rittman where we grew up. Our father is interred there. My niece and her husband have also joined us. Mark served 3 tours in Afghanistan. Some of his unit buddies are buried at Ohio Western Reserve.  My father was a Korean War veteran and I served in the U.S. Air Force.

December 14, 2024 was a cold, but sunny day. Volunteers of all ages come from all over Northeast Ohio. Some were there for the first time. Some come annually like we do. I spoke to a young father and his sons who came with their Boy Scout troop. Together, we laid 15,000 wreaths.  (Photos are provided below.)

These wreaths are sponsored by individuals and organizations. I purchase one specifically for Dad’s grave, as well as for the general wreath laying. The volunteers were able to cover 5 sections this year. We hope to place a wreath on every grave someday. As of the end of 2024, there are over 50,000 individuals interred at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

It is truly a moving experience. I consider it a privilege to honor our father, my fellow veterans, and those who are serving our country. We must all remember Freedom is not free.
