The Way You Due the Things You Do

"The Way You Do the Things You Do" was a 1964 hit single by the Temptations for the Motown label. Written by Miracles’ members Smokey Robinson and Bobby Rogers, the single was the Temptations' first Billboard Hot 100 song, peaking in the Top 20 at #11. The song has the unique distinction of reaching the American Top 40 hit in four successive decades, from the 1960s to the 1990s. A version by Hall & Oates featuring Temptation members Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1986. A cover version by British reggae band UB40 hit #6 in the U.S. in 1990.

I have included a YouTube link to the original song below for those of you who would like an early morning pick-me-up.

E Street Radio celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special concert by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band at the Apollo Theater in New York City on March 9, 2012. The show marked Springsteen's first full performance following Clarence Clemons's death and the first to feature the newly assembled nine-piece backing band that Springsteen would use on his upcoming tours. Bruce and the band paid tribute to the historic theater by performing a medley of Motown songs, including “The Way You Do the Things You Do.” The medley begins with a tribute to the many Motown stars that Bruce admired. A YouTube link to that performance is included below.

The CFPs of Impel Wealth Management and our partners at Horizon Advisor Network’s Investylitics committee also have a certain way of “doing the things we do.” This includes our commitment to being students of the business. This due diligence is intentional, driven by a desire to help our clients achieve their financial planning and investment goals. This plays out in several ways, which I will outline below.

First of all, the CFPs of Impel Wealth and our investment committee brethren are all avid readers. For me, this means reading 600 to 800 pages a month of commentary. There is a certain confidence that comes with being well-read and well-versed on the economic, investment, and geopolitical landscape we are all trying to navigate. In addition to this, I have lived through more than 35 years of economic and investment history alongside my clients. This means that I am not just reading about things that happened in the past. I have firsthand knowledge of and recollection of these periods of economic boom and economic crisis.

Secondly, we all attend and participate in industry educational conferences. Sometimes, these are sponsored by Cetera, our broker-dealer. Nathan, Irene, and I will all attend the Connect2Peers conference in Orlando in July. We will hear from industry experts, economists, market strategists, and Home Office leaders discussing the latest tools and technology that the firm is making available to help us better serve you, our trusted friends and clients.

These also sometimes take the form of virtual conferences that are attended by a much wider audience. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be attending the Mauldin Economics Strategic Investment Conference. John Mauldin, founder and CEO, recently said, “This year marks the 21st Strategic Investment Conference, and we are pulling out all the stops to make it a truly memorable experience. I think this is the best faculty we have ever had, especially considering the times we are in. The conference starts this Monday, May 12, and goes every other day for five days. You can watch it live, watch it later at your leisure, and of course, read the transcripts, which we try to post quickly. We are really emphasizing the Q&A part this year, and you don’t want to miss the final panel.”

Finally, part of how we “do the things we do” is by attending due diligence meetings hosted by some of our investment partner firms. To that end, I was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, last week attending the Thornburg Investment Advisor Summit. Many of you know that we have utilized several Thornburg funds in our model portfolios for over 15 years. Attending a conference like this gives me a chance to meet and talk with several portfolio managers to whom we have entrusted our clients ' hard-earned money.

During the conference in early May, I got to spend time with the company's Chief Investment Strategist, Brian McMahon, who oversees one of the funds we use in our portfolios, and the bond management team that oversees another of our holdings. There is nothing like face-to-face meetings with economists and portfolio managers. It gives you a sense of who they are, helps you understand their process, allows you to ask questions, and ultimately leads to greater confidence in your decision making.

Reading hundreds of pages of economic and geopolitical literature, attending multiple educational and investment conferences throughout the year, and flying to one of our partner investment firm's home offices to hear directly from their portfolio managers is definitely not as much fun as listening to the Temptations. However, our commitment to lifelong learning to help us make good decisions for the benefit of our clients is how we “due diligence” the things we do.” I thought this was an essential reminder for you as we continue “Moving Life Forward.”
