"This too shall pass “is a Persian proverb that reflects on the temporary nature of the human condition — that neither the bad, nor good, moments in life ever indefinitely last. This philosophy has shown up throughout history, including the story of King Solomon having a ring made bearing this phrase in Hebrew. It was also Abraham Lincoln's favorite saying, which he said was applicable in any and every situation one could encounter. It is a mantra that could have been repeated many times over the last three years as we faced a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical divide.
Over this time, the faith of long-term investors has been severely tested. This is not uncommon. As Warren Buffett has been known to say, “Every decade or so, dark clouds will fill the economic skies, and they will briefly rain gold”. Each successive episode requires successful investors, and the advisors who provide wisdom and guidance to them, to reject the idea that “this time is different”, and instead, cling to the wisdom in the proverb above that “this too shall pass”.

Of course, we know that each episode of economic and stock market volatility is accompanied by a different set of facts and circumstances. However, we also know from history that a free market, capitalist economy will eventually fight through these issues, figure out solutions, and move on to new heights, thus bringing new wealth to those who believe enough to stay the course.
We believe the future will likely provide us with many additional opportunities to practice this patience, discipline, and belief. Successful investing is fundamentally simple. However, it will never be easy. If it was, everyone would be wealthy. As most people are not wealthy, we do not want to follow the actions of most people. Despite what Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac told us in 1977, it is never easy to "Go Your Own Way".
