Waitin' on a Sonny (James) Day!

April 01, 2026

Bruce Springsteen wrote "Waitin' on a Sunny Day" as a classic pop-soul anthem inspired by Smokey Robinson's upbeat R&B. Although it was written prior to September 11th, its placement on the 2002 album The Rising transformed it into a powerful message of resilience and hope. The song took on a broader meaning…a reflection of a simpler world and a collective desire to “chase the clouds away.”

At its core, the lyrics describe a protagonist who relies on a loved one to help him through tough times. The "sunny day" symbolizes the return of joy and stability through companionship. Springsteen initially considered the song a "throwaway" and almost discarded it, but his longtime producer Jon Landau recognized its charm and convinced him to record it.

A music video was released in 2002, although it was not of the studio version, but instead the live performance from the DVD Live in Barcelona. If you have never seen the video or heard the song, I strongly encourage you to take 5 minutes to watch the joy of the live performance… it will make your day better.

Similarly, on Saturday, March 14th, Rachel and I were also “waiting on a Sonny (James) day”. You see, we had flown down to Charleston, South Carolina, the evening of March 12th, as our daughter Sedona was due to be induced for the birth of our first grandchild the evening before. Unfortunately, as she and our son-in-law, Mark, were getting ready to leave for the hospital, they received a phone call from the maternity ward that there had been an influx of women who had gone into labor, and there was literally no room for them at the inn.

They were told to stay home and wait until a room became available. This included waiting all day Thursday, and when they finally talked to the hospital Friday morning around 11:00 AM, they were told that four rooms would be transitioning that day, and she would likely get a phone call late that afternoon or evening to come in and start the process. Rachel and I were relieved, as I was due to fly back to Ohio on Monday and certainly did not want to miss his birth.

As luck would have it, Mark and Sedona decided to take us to their favorite pizza place for an early dinner while they were waiting for a call to come into the hospital. Because it was Friday, there was a 40-minute wait for a table. As you might guess, just as our name came to the top of the list, they received a phone call from the hospital saying that a birthing suite had opened and that they were to report there within an hour. We left the restaurant, headed home to grab their bags, and made a quick stop at the Chick-fil-A drive-through to get them food, since there was no pizza in their future.

And in that moment, the words felt especially fitting:

Without you
I'm a drummer, girl, that can't keep a beat
Ice cream truck on a deserted street
I hope that you're coming to stay

I'm waitin'
Waitin' on a sunny day
Gonna chase the clouds away
Waitin' on a sunny day

By noon the next day, things were moving slowly. At 3:00 PM, they decided to increase the Pitocin they were giving her to move labor along. Rachel and I headed back to their house to let their dog, Rocco, out and take him for a walk. Shortly after 4:30 PM, we received a phone call from Mark, who said things had moved quickly and that we should get back to the hospital, which was about 10 minutes away. By the time we got there, we received a second message that she was starting to push, and 49 minutes later, we had a beautiful grandson, Sonny James.

We were able to spend time with them Saturday night and a good bit of Sunday. I saw them on Monday morning at 8:00 AM at the hospital before I flew back to Ohio for meetings. Luckily for everyone, Rachel was able to stay in Charleston until Friday to help them make the transition back home and get settled into their new life.

I am happy to report that everyone is doing incredibly well, even Rocco. We have been able to FaceTime with them regularly and continue to watch his daily progress and growth. We are also turning our second guest room into a nursery with a fully stocked library so that we can read to him during their visits here. As those of you who know me would expect, the entire Dr. Seuss library will be on the shelf.

I fully expect that Rachel and I will rack up some frequent flyer miles going back and forth to Charleston. Luckily, Breeze Airways offers a direct flight from Akron-Canton Airport that takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. That will make it easier for “Gigi” and “Pops” to spend time with our new grandson.

The song has become a staple of Springsteen’s live shows, often featuring a young fan from the audience invited on stage to sing the chorus. While some critics feel this "singalong" nature has simplified the song's original weight, it remains a celebrated anthem of optimism for fans worldwide.

And now, on the other side of it all, those same words carry a different meaning:

Without you
I'm working with the rain falling down
I'm half a party in a one dog town
I need you to chase these blues away

I'm waitin'
Waitin' on a sunny day
Gonna chase the clouds away
Waitin' on a sunny day

In a similar way, we are celebrating the joy and optimism of our growing family. Many of you have shared with me over the years that there is nothing like having a grandchild. Even though we have only been grandparents for just over a week, Rachel and I completely understand and concur. There’s something uniquely powerful about watching your child become a parent…it changes your perspective on time, family, and what truly matters.

Thank you for letting us share this special moment with you as we continue “Moving Life Forward” and, in our case, enjoy more “Sonny Days” ahead.
